According to the study conducted by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care and has been linked to restrictions in mobility, daily activities and the reduced quality of life for people suffering from it.

It is also linked to opioid dependence which kills about 50,000 to 75,000 people each year in the United States.
